Entry #7: Fresh

I have found a topic which talked about the food that we ingest every day and how healthy it is for our body. What we don't really think about is how our food is prepared and where it is coming from. I watched a movie recently called Fresh, and it talked about all of these things, and I would like to tell you all about this.

I am going to start with some context on the movie. This movie was made because Ana Sofia Joanes was asking questions to herself about her own food. Though it wasn't just about the food, it was also questioning all the new food illnesses that had come into fruition recently. In fact, the movie starts out with a guy named George. He talks about how when he was in college, one of his roommates said the only thing Americans fear is inconvenience in life. We know people just want food and don't question how we get it.

Something that I don't think people consider is how the food is made, and if we think about when we go to the grocery store to buy food, why there are two different types of food in the produce. We have organic produce, and we have stuff that is not organically grown, and most of the time, people buy the cheaper option, especially nowadays when prices are skyrocketing, and wages are not going up fast enough to keep up. For some context, I work at a grocery store and see how much food goes in and out of the store and what people look for in this situation. They walk in, buy the cheapest crap they can find, and leave after buying it. About halfway through the movie, a guy named Will Allen talks about how he is reusing the thrown-out produce from grocery stores how they are only getting about 6 million pounds of food waste, and how they turn it into high-nutrient microbiological soil for their plants. What some people don't know is that even though six million seems like a big number in the way he is talking, it is actually very little compared to the whole amount. I don't think most people thought about this every day like the people in this movie. I know I knew a little bit about how much my store was losing, but I didn't know how it was affecting people throughout the world. I am glad that I came across this, and I have started to change my own food habits and what I buy or eat.

I personally think that we as Americans should have known about this, and we should have started to make a change for the better in order to start making our lives healthier, but that's only my opinion. I think that this movie has changed the way I think about this concept and that we should care about this more than we actually do. I hope that this will help y'all change your mind about this sort of thing and that you start thinking about this more often.

Signing Off,

Hadley
